Williams, John

Williams, John
(1796–1839)
   Missionary.
Williams was born in London. In 1817 he was sent by the London Missionary Society to Polynesia. He worked diligently and by 1834 it was said that no significant island within two thousand miles of Tahiti had not been visited. He publicised his efforts in a British lecture tour in 1838 and by his Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands. On his return he was murdered and eaten by natives of Erromanga, in retaliation for earlier white cruelty. He was widely mourned and his death aroused a burst of enthusiasm for missions.
